Low number of website visitors is detected by website visitor tracker

There can be a few situations that may result in low visitor counts to be shown by your visitor tracker. If you already have verified your tracker installation and the tracker is positively installed in the right location of your website and appears on ALL pages of your website, then you may need to look into further optimization of your web pages and how the elements of your pages load. Ensure that your website is properly displayed in different type of browsers. It does frequently occur that certain browsers do NOT load content properly. Most commonly, webmasters verify that their website loads as intended in the following browsers:

  • Internet Explorer 6
  • Goggle Chrome
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Apple Safari
  • Opera
Additionally, absence of hits on social network sites may occur if you actually locked your profile. By locking your profile and making it available to verified users, you're blocking the search engines from indexing your pages. Therefore, unless you heavily advertise your pages specifically to the website users of that particular social network site, expect your traffic to be very low or non-existent.This is the most common question we receive from TraceMyIP members who started website publishing recently. A lot of people think that once they have created a website, there will be a heavy visitor traffic at their website right that instant. To their surprise, they get only a couple of hits per week, or even less. That comes in a form of a shock and publishers start instantly blaming the counters that they may have installed on their websites. To add to the confusion, the server side statistics provided to them by their web hosting company may show some hits, whereas TraceMyIP will not show those hits as real visitors. For explanation, please continue to read.

If you believe that your visitor tracker code simply doesn't work, then rest assured that if properly installed, it will work. All TraceMyIP accounts share the same visitor tracking engine, including our commercial and law enforcement accounts, so a malfunction cannot be attributed to a single user account such as yours. If there is a malfunction, we'll be working to resolve an issue before you will even get a chance to notice it.

If you have installed the correct and the same tracker code on all of your pages of a specific website and ensured that the tracker image actually shows up on all of your pages, but the number of hits you are getting is low or lower than your website hosting provider's logs, here are the things to consider:
  • TraceMyIP captures only the real visitors, with browsers that accept cookies and show the entire content of your website, including images, video and audio. Meaning is does not count just any connections to your site. This means that it specifically filters out any connections to your website that may be made by search engine spiders, spam bots, website indexing scripts, or email addresses harvesting robots. The server side counters do not see the difference for this type of hits, and show every single connection made to your server – whether it’s made by an automated script or via a human interaction. To you, the end user, it means that with TraceMyIP you're getting hits recorded ONLY if a visitor has come to your website with a fully functioning browser that has actually displayed the content of your pages. All other false hits are not recorded giving you a true image of how many people have seen the contents on your website.
  • If you have just created your website and submitted it to the search engines, this does not guarantee that you will receive any traffic from the search engines immediately. Even if your website shows up when you type your website name or URL in a search engine, it doesn’t mean that it will appear on the first page of a search engine query page for the keywords that are associated with the subject of your website.

After all, this is how people search for information - by keywords and not necessarily a website URL, unless you actively market your website URL. After you have submitted your website to search engines, there is usually a grace period in the range of 3-6 months for the search engines to assign any “weight” to the information presented on your website. And this “weight” will largely depend on inbound links to your website from other sites. Therefore you may not even see any traffic from search engines during that grace period. Meanwhile, it is generally suggested that you look into Search Engine Optimization. This includes getting relevant links from other related websites to your website, advertising your website via various methods, and writing a good amount of content for your website, while updating it regularly.

The content writing is especially important if your website is multimedia based, using flash or video content as search engines cannot read what’s inside of your flash files, therefore the text within your content is not visible to search engines. If you are in a highly competitive field, local advertising methods may be actually of a more benefit to you then online. For example if you try to sell web hosting services, it is such a competitive field that some companies pay upwards of $50,000 per month on advertising just to get noticed. You however may be able to gain local businesses to use you if you support your advertising via regular flyer ads and news paper articles.

Another perspective to look into are the technical aspects of your website’s core design. Ensure that your Meta Tags, including the website title, keywords and description, are closely matched to each page’s content. If you have designed a flash website, make sure your web pages still contain plenty of text OUTSIDE of flash body. The search engines cannot index any text properly that is embedded into the Adobe Flash elements.

One of the other technical aspects that could also contribute to low visitor count is your web hosting provider. The inexpensive shared hosting plans offered by many web hosting companies have thousands of accounts on a single web server. If only ONE user makes a single programming mistake that for example creates a processing loop, it will take an entire shared hosting server offline. This happens VERY often. And obviously all of your hosted websites will become unavailable. And when search engines see problems like that, your website suddenly becomes an unreliable source of information. Another technical issue could be a faulty configuration in the DNS records for your domain names. Improperly configured DNS records can cause your website to be only accessible in selected geographical regions. Your website may load ok in New York, USA for example, but will not load anywhere else in the world. Check with your website hosting or domain registrar to ensure that your website is pingable worldwide.

Additionally, absence of hits on social network sites may occur if you have locked your profile. By locking your profile and making it available to verified users only, you're blocking the search engines from indexing your pages. Therefore, unless you heavily advertise your pages specifically to the website users of that particular social network site, expect your traffic to be very low or non-existent.
